Tokyo’s Toei Subway Oedo Line has rolled out a new communication system at Tochomae Station, aiming to improve accessibility and ease of use for passengers. The innovative system features a transparent display panel capable of converting spoken inquiries into text and translating them into 12 different languages.
Developed by the Bureau of Transportation of the Tokyo Metropolitan government, the system is being trialled as part of efforts to cater to the needs of international travellers and individuals with hearing impairments. Operating at the station’s service window, the system aims to facilitate smoother interactions between passengers and staff throughout the day.
By displaying subtitles in multiple languages, including Japanese, English, Chinese (simplified), Korean and more, the system seeks to break down language barriers and improve communication for a diverse range of passengers. In addition, it provides support for individuals with hearing impairments, ensuring that they can engage effectively with station personnel.

The trial period will allow authorities to assess the effectiveness of the system in handling inquiries from different demographics. Feedback gathered during this phase will inform decisions regarding potential expansion to other Toei subway stations in the future.
The introduction of this communication system aligns with Tokyo’s preparations for upcoming international events, including the 2025 World Athletics Championships and the 2025 Deaflympics. It underscores the city’s commitment to enhancing accessibility and inclusivity within its public transportation infrastructure.
As passengers experience the benefits of the new system first-hand, authorities will continue to evaluate its performance and explore opportunities for further improvements. With a focus on enhancing customer accessibility and satisfaction, Tokyo’s subway system aims to provide a seamless and welcoming experience for all passengers, regardless of language or ability.
