Flix has announced that it has released its second voluntary Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report, outlining ambitious emissions reduction goals while highlighting the environmental benefits of collective transportation.

With a notable milestone of serving over 81 million passengers in 2023, Flix has solidified its position as a key driver of sustainable and affordable travel. The company’s ESG strategy, deeply embedded in its operations, has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), recognising the company’s commitment to aligning with global climate objectives.

André Schwämmlein, CEO and Co-Founder of Flix, said: “We are committed to transforming long-distance travel globally. With 11-years of experience as a global travel-tech company re-shaping the sector with a steady vision, we aim to be a driving force towards a sustainable future. Sustainability will remain the guiding principle along this path, with focus on safeguarding the environment and creating value for our stakeholders and the communities we serve.”

In addition, Flix’s recent analysis reveals the significant emissions reduction that has been achieved through collective travel. By comparing CO2 emissions across various transportation modes, Flix determined that over one million tonnes of CO2 has been avoided in 2023 alone due to passengers opting for Flix’s services over individual car or plane journeys.

Recognising the importance of enabling collective transportation, Flix has expanded its network to include over 5,600 destinations across four continents, with a third of these destinations having fewer than 20,000 inhabitants. This aims to facilitate easier and more sustainable travel options, particularly in underserved regions.

Furthermore, Flix’s near-term emissions reduction targets, established as part of its decarbonisation strategy, have been rigorously validated by the SBTi. By 2032, Flix aims to reduce its absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 54.6%, alongside a 40.9% reduction in Scope 3 emissions associated with its partners’ fleets per passenger kilometre.

In addition to environmental initiatives, Flix’s ESG report highlights strides in social responsibility and governance. Notably, the company has achieved a 44% female new hire rate in 2023, surpassing industry benchmarks and increased female representation on its Supervisory Board to 25%.

Moreover, Flix’s commitment to sustainable growth is evidenced by the adoption of advanced EURO VI efficiency standards in almost all Flix coaches (98%) across Europe, underscoring the company’s dedication to minimising its environmental footprint.
