Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has unveiled a series of measures aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reliability of Bee Network bus services. The announcement comes as part of ongoing efforts to improve public transportation across the region.

Scheduled to commence from 28 January 2024, timetable adjustments will be implemented across 44 services. The changes aim to address punctuality concerns and streamline departure and arrival times for improved reliability. Discussions are underway with Go North West, the operator of the region’s largest franchises, to introduce additional buses as part of a planned roll-out in April- 2024. The expansion is expected to bolster service capacity and further enhance punctuality and reliability.

The transition of bus services under local control marks a significant shift in Greater Manchester’s transportation landscape. Previously, services in Bolton, Wigan and parts of Bury and Salford operated on a commercial basis, with limited oversight. The integration into the Bee Network framework has empowered TfGM to evaluate service performance meticulously and address areas requiring improvement.

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “In two months, we will bring franchising to the north of Greater Manchester, with the whole network fully under our control in less than a year, all while continuing to work on a range of other measures to make journeys better for people, including improved customer information, more new buses and better bus routes to further improve reliability.”

In addition to timetable adjustments and fleet expansions, TfGM is actively collaborating with local authorities to mitigate disruptions caused by roadworks. The integration of advanced technology at traffic signals aims to optimise bus routes and minimise delays.

Director of Bus, Stephen Rhodes, said: “We are absolutely committed to delivering a consistently good performance for passengers, and since launching the Bee Network have been listening intently to feedback from customers and working closely with operators to monitor performance.”

Passengers are encouraged to stay informed about service changes by utilising the Bee Network app, visiting travel shops, or accessing information at bus stops. The phased roll-out of Bee Network services underscores TfGM’s dedication to ensuring accessible, efficient and reliable public transportation for residents across Greater Manchester.
