King County Metro has announced that it has taken significant steps to enhance security measures across its extensive transit network, aiming to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers throughout their journeys. Over the past two years, the transit authority has increased its security personnel, expanded customer support initiatives and introduced specialised teams to address behavioural health concerns among riders.

With a doubling of Transit Security Officers from 70 to 160, King County Metro has increased its presence on-board buses and at transit centres to deter unlawful or unsafe behaviour. These officers offer assistance to riders while actively monitoring and addressing security concerns. Notably, their monthly boardings of buses has surged from 2,093 in February 2023 to over 10,000 by November 2023. Moreover, certain transit centres, including Aurora Village and Burien, now benefit from round-the-clock security coverage, initiated in response to evolving safety needs.

Complementing the efforts of Transit Security Officers, Metro Ambassadors wearing distinctive blue jackets provide customer support in high-traffic areas and during major events. Leveraging their extensive knowledge of the transit network, many ambassadors are former Metro bus operators, equipped to assist passengers in more than 140 languages through language interpretation services.

Moreover, King County Metro has introduced a Behavioural Health Support Team trained in de-escalation techniques and equipped to provide essential resources to individuals in crisis. By offering cold weather supplies, connecting with community partners and facilitating shelter referrals, the team aims to mitigate the reliance on law enforcement for behavioural issues.

The proactive approach adopted by King County Metro has yielded tangible results, with security incidents decreasing by 12% from pre-pandemic levels in 2019 and by 22% from the peak in 2020. Furthermore, drug-related incidents have seen a notable decline of 33% in January 2024 compared to the same period in the previous year.

To uphold the integrity of transit services, King County Metro enforces a Code of Conduct applicable to all passengers. Moderate infractions may prompt verbal warnings and potential removal, with bus operators empowered to request support from Metro Transit Police and Transit Security Officers. Severe violations, such as assaults or drug offences, may result in arrest or suspension of transit privileges, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all passengers while providing avenues for behavioural improvement.
