Nextbike Poland has announced that the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis (GZM) in Poland is launching its Metropolitan Bicycle (Metrobike) system on 25 February 2024. The extensive network will cover the entire GZM region, comprising 31 cities and municipalities, making it the largest city bike system in Poland and the third-largest in Europe.

Managed by Nextbike Poland, the Metrobike system will roll-out in three stages. Beginning on 25 February 2024, 1,260 bicycles will be available in eight cities where similar systems are already in operation. The second stage, scheduled for the second half of the year, will see an increase to almost 4,800 bicycles across additional cities. The final phase, set for 2025, will complete the system with a total of 7,000 bicycles in all participating cities and municipalities.

The Metrobike system boasts 7,000 fourth-generation bicycles, specifically SmartBike 2.0 models equipped with GPS transmitters, eliminating the need for traditional locking mechanisms.

Nextbike Poland CEO, Tomasz Wojtkiewicz, said: “Through the synergy between Nextbike and the Metropolis, we are confident that our focused efforts in the field of innovation will contribute to improving the quality of life for residents, offering them modern, ecological and convenient transportation solutions, another element of Smart City in the GZM area.”

Metrobike users will have access to a dedicated application, with the option to rent bicycles through the existing Nextbike application and eventually through the TransportGZM application. The system will incorporate advanced technologies, including automatic live chats and chatbots, providing flexible and user-friendly support.

“Our Metrobikes will be a part of our extensive transportation system. We don’t consider the Metrobike merely as a recreational vehicle, although it will excel in that role as well. It is an equal component of sustainable urban transport, alongside trams, buses and trolleybuses. As befitting the first metropolis in Poland, we are constructing the first such large and technologically advanced urban transport system that respects the challenges and needs of the inhabitants of modern cities,” said Kazimierz Karolczak, Chairman of the GZM board.
