The Community Transport Association (CTA) has announced that it has released a manifesto urging the next UK government to embrace community-based solutions to address the pressing challenges of accessible transport across the country. Titled A Better Future for Transport: National Challenges, Community Solutions, this manifesto outlines a vision for collaboration between the government, CTA and the wider Community Transport sector.

David Kelly, CTA Director for Scotland, said: “Investing in community solutions is essential to build a more accessible, affordable, and attractive transport system with far-reaching benefits. As we look towards the general election, it is vital the next UK government fully values and invests in community transport. Working with communities is not only a pragmatic solution to alleviate pressures on our NHS and the social care system, but it is also the right thing to do.”

The manifesto, developed in partnership with Community Transport operators and CTA members across the UK, addresses five key priorities reflecting national challenges:

EU Future Mobility Task Force calls for European leadership in transport innovation

  • Modernising for growth: Proposing innovative strategies to revitalise transport networks amid a shrinking bus system
  • Improving access to health and social care: Advocating for enhanced transport links to healthcare facilities
  • Investing in community solutions: Championing community-driven initiatives to combat climate change, reduce poverty and bridge regional disparities
  • Accelerating community-led climate action: Promoting sustainable transport measures to combat climate change at the grassroots level
  • Delivering a fair deal for volunteers: Recognising and supporting the invaluable role of volunteers in sustaining community transport services.

CTA’s research underscores the vital role of community transport in supporting health services, facilitating trips to GP surgeries, hospitals, vaccination centres and care homes. By offering door-to-door services, community transport not only saves millions through reduced missed appointments and delays but also fosters social connections and combats loneliness.

The CTA manifesto arrives amid mounting calls for sustainable transport solutions and greater accessibility nationwide. With the upcoming general election on the horizon, CTA’s proposals seek to transform the transport landscape, ensuring a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
