National Express has announced that West Midlands bus passengers have saved over £5 million since the introduction of the ‘Tap and Cap’ contactless payment system. Implemented on 19 July 2021, Tap and Cap allows commuters to tap their contactless card or device each time they board a bus within a week, ensuring that their total payment is capped.

In the period since its implementation, a staggering 340 million journeys have been made on National Express West Midlands buses, with a significant surge in contactless payments. The introduction of Tap and Cap has enabled passengers to avoid overpaying and has resulted in total savings exceeding £5 million.

The three-day and seven-day capping is calculated based on journeys made from Monday to Sunday. Passengers using Tap and Cap can save an additional 50p on the three-day cap and an impressive £13 on the seven-day cap.

David Bradford, National Express West Midlands Managing Director, said: “With Tap and Cap, you can make as many bus journeys as you like using the same contactless card or device and we’ll cap your fare so you don’t pay more than you should. It takes away the stress of searching for change at the bus stop and is easy to do.”

For a single day, the cap is set at £4 and passengers benefit from paying £11.50 for the three-day contactless cap instead of the individual daily fare of £12, and £15 for the seven-day contactless cap instead of the £28 cost of purchasing daily savers individually.

The success of the Tap and Cap system demonstrates the positive impact of contactless technology on public transportation, providing affordability, convenience and significant savings for bus passengers in the West Midlands.
