Ahsan Baig, CIO/CTO at AC Transit, tells Intelligent Transport how a new Voice over IP (VoIP), computer-aided dispatch (CAD) and automatic vehicle location (AVL) solution has enabled one of California’s largest public transit providers to keep tighter control over operations and maintenance by overhauling its on-board computer technology, back-office data management and 4G/5G-based voice and data communications systems.

AC Transit’s CAD/AVL and land mobile radio (LMR) systems have been in place for almost two decades. The system was purchased in 2000 and went live in around 2003. It was state-of-the-art at the time and was able to meet the business needs for a number of years, but the technology has moved on – and so have our requirements and the needs of our riders. On-time performance, rider experience and the efficiency of services are more important than they’ve ever been, and we started to realise that the legacy system was no longer meeting our expectations.
