Alana Dave, Urban Transport Director at the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), explains the measures that the transport sector is taking to ensure safety and uphold workers’ right during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On this episode, Intelligent Transport Editor Luke Antoniou is joined by the ITF’s Alana Dave to understand the affect of the global COVID-19 crisis on public transport staff, and discuss best practice for an industry playing a crucial role in helping key workers to keep working.

Firstly, we take a look at what the ITF’s response to COVID-19 has been like so far and its role in supporting the transport workforce through the pandemic. Associations and industry bodies have a huge responsibility in times of crisis like these to ensure that the interests of those they represent are protected.

Sticking with the theme of responsibility, we also discuss the responsibilities of operators and local/national authorities in providing continuous access to transport services for key workers, and what that means for transport staff. How do operators and authorities maintain safety for drivers and other front-line staff when their services are key in supporting workers in other sectors to help the public through the COVID-19 pandemic?

There’s also discussion of the importance of communication with staff in times of crisis. It’s crucial that staff have access to and are given the most accurate and up-to-date information – the speed with which the situation can change during a public health crisis means that this must treated as time sensitive.
