NZ approves funding for integrated public transport system in Wellington

The NZ Transport Agency has approved funding for the next phase of the Let’s Get Wellington Moving (LGWM) programme, including detailed businesses cases and development of an early delivery programme.

Transport Agency General Manager System Design and Delivery Brett Gliddon says he is pleased the Agency is able to join Wellington City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council in approving the LGWM programme to the next phase.

“We have been working with our council partners and engaging with the people of Wellington on Let’s Get Wellington Moving for more than three years. Now that we have an agreed plan and funding approved for the next phase, the LGWM team can get on with their work programme.

“This decision will enable the team to develop the early delivery programme (works that can be delivered in the short-term) while detailed business cases for the larger and more complex components of the programme get underway.

“The Transport Agency is working in partnership with local government to shape a transport system that is integrated with the land use and urban development priorities for the city.

“LGWM has a strong focus on moving more people with fewer vehicles. In a city as geographically constrained as Wellington, this focus reflects the kind of city and region the community have told us they want.”

Funding approved by the Transport Agency for the next phase is $66.2 million ($21.2 million in the 2018-2021 National Land Transport Fund) of the estimated $109.3 million required. LGWM partners will consider the longer-term funding requirements for the programme through their normal funding approval processes, which will be informed by the detailed business cases.
