NTA awards contract to deliver mobile ticketing system in Ireland

The National Transport Authority (NTA) in Ireland has awarded a contract worth more than $4 million to Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) to deliver a mobile ticketing system for Ireland.

The service will be rolled out on a pilot basis on certain Bus Éireann regional routes later in 2019, with further routes to be added on a phased basis. The new solution will improve customer experience and provide users with a single capability to purchase tickets for multiple public transport operators. Cubic’s mobile ticketing solution supports the NTA’s vision to make public transportation in Ireland simpler and more efficient for travellers.

Anne Graham, Chief Executive of the National Transport Authority, said: “The introduction of mobile ticketing represents a significant development in public transport ticketing in Ireland, but it is just the first of many changes in ticketing that we believe will enhance the provision of public transport across Ireland.”

Director of Public Transport Services, Tim Gaston, said: “We are delighted to be able to announce the award of this contract to Cubic. They have a proven track record, and their mobile ticketing system is already deployed in major cities such as Chicago, New York, Cologne, Germany and London. As providers of Iarnród Éireann’s integrated ticketing management and distribution system, they are also familiar with the dynamics of public transport in Ireland. We are looking forward to working together with them to deliver mobile ticketing for public transport customers.”

This is a significant milestone in the enhancement of public transport and is the first phase of the Authority’s Next Generation Ticketing (NGT) programme, which seeks to implement new and more flexible ticketing systems, provide additional ways of paying for travel and improve the overall customer experience.

Laurent Eskenazi, Managing Director, EMEA, Cubic Transportation Systems, said: “We are very pleased to work with the NTA to deliver a mobile ticketing system for Ireland that benefits from the in-depth experience and knowledge we’ve gained through supporting large, medium and small agencies worldwide. As the very first national mobile ticketing project for Ireland, we look forward to simplifying traveller journeys and creating a quicker and less labour-intensive ticketing process for operators.”

The mobile ticketing solution enables multimodal transportation through an integrated user interface. The mobile ticketing app enables travellers to easily purchase tickets and manage their online accounts. Cubic’s mobile ticketing system is deployed and being rolled out in several major cities including Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago, New York, Cologne, Germany and Brisbane, Australia.
