Another 95 bike stations are to be added, bringing the total to 519, with the number of electric bikes to be tripled from 300 to 1,000.

Barcelona’s bike-share system is updated and extended with more bikes

In Barcelona, 2,490 bicycles and 198 old Bicing stations have been replaced by a new service since 12 January 2019 – almost half of the bike-share system.

With the deployment of the new system – which has a new design and will operate 24 hours a day – now halfway through, the new bikes are operating at the same volume as the old system, handling 18,000 of the 40,000 journeys made every day.

The first stage of the roll-out involves replacing the 424 old stations and 6,000 old pushbikes with new models. This is being done progressively and will take until the end of April 2019.

Until then the two systems will operate side by side, independently of one another. On average, bikes on both systems are being used seven times a day.

In addition, an average of 104 new users are registering every day; slightly more in comparison to the rate when only the old Bicing system was operating.

Between April and the end of 2019, the service will be extended further, particularly in the districts of Horta-Guinardó, Nou Barris and the Zona Franca, as well as in neighbourhoods where demand is highest.

Once the changeover is completed, the stations will all be on-street and offer both models. Users will be able to reserve bikes five minutes in advance.
