Through the grant, the Federal Transit Administration aims to improve transportation access for underserved populations, including older adults, people with disabilities and low-income individuals.
In a move aimed at bolstering accessibility for older adults, people with disabilities and low-income individuals, the U.S. Department of Transportation‘s (USDOT) Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has unveiled a competitive grant programme, making approximately $4.7 million in funding available for projects dedicated to improving transportation services.
“For seniors, for people with disabilities, for low-income families, transit access isn’t just about getting where you need to go – it’s about dignity and independence,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, highlighting the significance of transit access for underserved demographics. “We are proud to provide new funding that will connect underserved populations with necessities such as medical care and groceries through affordable, accessible public transit.”
The funding initiative is part of the Federal Transit Administration’s Innovative Coordinated Access and Mobility (ICAM) pilot programme. ICAM focuses on supporting projects that enhance transportation co-ordination and mobility, with a special emphasis on improving access to non-emergency medical transportation.

FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez echoed the sentiment, emphasising the universal right to accessible healthcare and essential services. “All Americans should be able to easily access healthcare and other critical needs to live their lives,” said Fernandez. “We are excited to provide funding opportunities to improve how local, state and regional organisations co-ordinate transportation services to facilitate connections in communities. We are committed to ensuring no American is left out.”
Interested parties, including local, state and regional organisations, are encouraged to submit proposals for innovative projects that align with the objectives of the ICAM programme. The applications will be meticulously evaluated based on criteria outlined in the Notice of Funding Opportunity. The submission deadline for these proposals is 13 February 2024.
