Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that it has officially commenced the installation of solar energy panels at key transport hubs, marking a significant stride towards sustainable and clean energy solutions. This strategic move encompasses the Dubai Metro Depots at Jebel Ali and Al Qusais, along with the Tram Depot at Al Safouh.

This project, slated for completion by the first quarter of 2024, is expected to generate an impressive 9,959 megawatts of solar power. Aligned with the Dubai government’s “Shams Dubai” initiative and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy, the initiative reflects RTA’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, concentrating on crucial sectors such as public transportation, buildings and waste management.

By installing solar photovoltaic (PV) power systems, RTA aims to enhance the efficiency of infrastructure facilities while reaping economic benefits. The solar panels, beyond their environmental impact, are anticipated to yield significant cost savings, resource conservation and a noteworthy reduction of carbon emissions.

This initiative unfolds in two primary phases. The initial phase involves the mechanical setup, encompassing the installation of supporting structures and the mounting of PV panels. The subsequent phase focuses on the electrical setup, comprising the process of wiring and establishing connections for the solar energy system. RTA estimates an annual CO2 emissions reduction of 3,962 tonnes.

The breakdown of solar energy production reveals impressive figures, with 3,165 megawatts at Jebel Ali Metro Depot, 3,804 megawatts at Al Qusais Metro Depot and 2,990 megawatts at Al Safouh Tram Depot. The solar panels boast a robust lifespan of 25-30 years, complemented by a periodic maintenance programme aimed at ensuring optimal energy production and operational efficiency.

The solar panel installation project on RTA’s buildings and facilities has been recognised in the MEP Middle East Awards, a regional award that showcases the achievements of individuals, projects and companies in mechanical and electrical engineering.
