MARTA announces new automated fare collection system

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has announced that it has awarded the contract for a new automated fare collection system (AFC 2.0) to Innovation in Transportation Inc., also known as INIT.

This major development aligns with MARTA’s renewed focus on Service, Experience and Expansion (SEE) – a comprehensive strategy aimed at improving transit services and offering a seamless journey to its passengers.

The new AFC 2.0 system is poised to revolutionise fare collection across MARTA’s network. One of its most significant improvements is the introduction of various payment options, making it more user-friendly. Passengers will be able to pay using debit and credit cards, as well as mobile wallets, directly at the fare gate, eliminating the need to use traditional vending machines.

MARTA General Manager and CEO Collie Greenwood said: “First and foremost, this new, state-of-the-art fare collection system will improve service and provide customers with a better overall experience. And from our side, AFC 2.0 will allow us to further optimise our operations and increase farebox recovery. It’s a major win for both MARTA and our riders.”

AFC 2.0 will eventually replace MARTA’s existing Breeze card and Breeze Mobile systems. The comprehensive upgrade plan involves the replacement and upgrading of rail station fare gates and bus fareboxes throughout the entire system. The roll-out of the new automated fare system is expected to take place over the next five years.

Some of the key benefits of the new AFC 2.0 system for MARTA and its customers include:

  • Convenient open payments system
  • Upgraded fare gates
  • User-friendly ticket machines
  • Modernised bus fare boxes
  • Expandable system
  • Adaptable system
  • Customisable pricing
  • Expansive retail network.

With these advancements, MARTA aims to transform the way passengers access and pay for public transportation, fostering a more convenient and enjoyable experience for its riders.
