Bird becomes largest micro-mobility operator in North America with Spin acquisition

Bird Global has announced that it has recently acquired Spin, a Berlin-based micro-mobility company. With this acquisition, the company has emerged as the largest micro-mobility operator in North America by market share.

Spin, headquartered in San Francisco, boasts a strong presence in North America, serving over 50 cities and university campuses. Currently, there is minimal overlap between Spin’s existing footprint and Bird’s operations, making it a complementary addition to Bird’s portfolio, while expanding its geographical reach.

The company intends to capitalise on its enhanced position to expand its operations in key cities such as Baltimore, Salt Lake City and Washington D.C., which are known for their strong micro-mobility market potential. In addition, Bird plans to focus on major university campuses, including Penn State University and the University of Michigan.

Following this acquisition, Bird now operates in 87% of the 50 most populous cities in the U.S. and Canada with shared micro-mobility programmes. This expansion aligns with the operator’s commitment to providing sustainable transportation options and contributing to a more liveable, environmentally friendly future.

Michael Washinushi, Bird’s Interim CEO, said: “In addition to our overall market leadership in North America, the company now holds a leading market share position in key markets, more new vehicles, cutting-edge technology and a significantly stronger financial position. Bird and Spin have many strategic synergies, which we believe will have an immediate impact in the third quarter. We are thrilled to welcome the Spin team to the Bird family and excited to continue to execute on our shared vision of a more liveable, sustainable future.”

Spin brings a fleet of over 60,000 vehicles to Bird, including a substantial number of modern, state-of-the-art vehicles. Both companies are recognised for their pioneering efforts in deploying pavement detection technology at scale.

Philip Reinckens, CEO of Spin, said: “We are excited to join forces with Bird, an innovative brand and a pioneer in micro-mobility. Together Bird and Spin create a powerful player in the North America market – one that is focused on responsible partnership, bringing reliable alternative transportation options to the communities we serve and creating a more sustainable future.”
