In an Auckland first, transport is collaboratively planned

Auckland Transport (AT) and the Waiheke Local Board are working together on a collaborative plan for the next ten years for Waiheke’s transport system.

The first of its kind for Auckland, the Waiheke 10 Year Transport Plan is a living document that envisions Waiheke’s ideal transport network for its people, character and community – now and into the future.

As an outcome of Auckland Council’s Governance Framework Review, AT and the Waiheke Local Board collaborated to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). One of the key actions that resulted from the MoU was the development of the Waiheke 10 Year Transport Plan.

The document combines current planned and committed projects with a jointly agreed list of future proposed projects. It sets out a list of projects, plans, services and processes to be proposed for funding consideration over the next funding cycle of 2021 to 2031.

“The development of the 10 Year Transport Plan is an encouraging step forward in our relationship with Auckland Transport”, said the Waiheke Local Board. “The Waiheke Transport Forum was also involved in the process and this plan gives a voice to a multitude of local requests for transport improvements on the island. The board encourages feedback through the upcoming public consultation period around the priority projects for the community over the coming decade.”

Andrew McGill, Head of AT’s Integrated Network Planning team, said: “Working with the Waiheke Local Board and our Iwi partners to develop this plan has been invaluable in keeping Waiheke’s people and character at the heart of the planning process. Through the proposed projects for consideration, we hope to achieve our shared vision of creating a safer, more connected transport network on the island”.

Based on public input, the projects selected for development from the plan are to be submitted for consideration in the 2021 Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP). The RLTP is the overarching programme comprising all of AT’s activities over a 10-year period, with funding confirmed for the first three years of that period. While the selected projects from the plan will be submitted for consideration in the Regional Land Transport Plan, they are not guaranteed to receive funding.
