Government announces funding for £29m Lincoln Transport Hub

The UK government has announced funding for a £29m Lincoln Transport Hub, including a new state-of-the-art bus station.

Funding has been approved for a new £29 million bus station and 1,000 space car park in Lincoln, with the aim of improving  city centre journeys for people living, working or visiting the city. According to the Department for Transport (DfT), the transport hub scheme is expected to create up to 200 jobs in the city, and deliver an economic boost worth £9 million a year.

The announcement follows approval of a new eastern bypass around the city earlier this year.

Led by City of Lincoln Council, the scheme will also see the construction of retail units and pedestrian plaza area connecting the new facilities with Lincoln Central Railway Station. The new bus station will provide live travel information for both bus and rail passengers, while the 1,000 space multi-storey will have up to 32 electric vehicle charging points to power the next generation of vehicles.

The scheme will also implement cycle lanes and traffic calming measures.

Commenting on the Scheme Transport Minister Andrew Jones said: “A new bus station, car park and upgraded railway station will be a huge benefit to people who live and work in Lincoln, and those who visit the city.

“Better transport facilities don’t just help people get around, they help them get on – connecting them to jobs, opportunities and helping deliver economic growth.”

The DfT will be funding £11 million towards the project – under the Local Growth Fund – with the remaining coming from the City of Lincoln Council, providing £16 million, and the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership contributing £2 million.

David Dexter, Deputy Chair of the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “This is a major investment in transport infrastructure in Lincoln, and we are delighted that the last piece of the funding jigsaw is now in place and work can begin on this transformational scheme.”

Work on Lincoln Transport Hub will begin on 28 August 2016 when the existing bus station will close and a new, temporary facility will become operational.

Contractors Willmott Dixon Construction will move on site and begin clearance work in preparation for the archaeological investigations set to take place under the old bus station.
