NJ TRANSIT has announced that it has introduced its first Sustainability Plan, a comprehensive roadmap designed to integrate sustainability into all facets of its operations while enhancing service quality and accessibility for its customers.

“NJ TRANSIT’s first ever Sustainability Plan serves as a blueprint for integrating sustainability into all aspects of our operations,” said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett. “This demonstrates that transit is clearly the best way to reduce New Jersey’s carbon footprint today and will be even more so in the future.”

The Sustainability Plan encapsulates key themes such as energy conservation, air quality improvement, resilience enhancement, waste reduction and water management. It represents a living document that will evolve over time, serving as a strategic guide for NJ TRANSIT to lead in sustainable transit practices. The plan is anchored on the following pillars:

  • Advancing sustainable practices and environmental stewardship
  • Modernising and expanding the transit network through strategic investments
  • Enhancing operational efficiency and effectiveness
  • Integrating sustainability into all agency projects and programmes
  • Establishing clear goals, strategies and actionable measures.

Aligning with Governor Murphy’s Energy Master Plan, this initiative not only reduces carbon emissions but also fosters community engagement and environmental stewardship.

NJ TRANSIT’s Sustainability Plan demonstrates its commitment to integrating sustainable practices into transit operations, reflecting the agency’s focus on environmental responsibility within public transportation.

The agency operates on 263 bus routes, three light rail lines and 12 commuter rail lines, in addition to offering Access Link paratransit service. With 166 rail stations, 62 light rail stations and over 19,000 bus stops, NJ TRANSIT plays a significant role in linking major points within New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia, making it one of the largest transit systems in the U.S.
