Ticketing and payment systems are key elements of a public transport system. Technological advances have helped systems evolve dramatically over recent decades, but things have got complicated for public transport operators and authorities. Twenty years ago, it was just a matter of choosing a tariff scheme, to design the system depending on passenger flows and finally to choose the supplier: i.e. the ticketing integrator that would take charge of the whole project to deliver a turnkey system.
