As part of the North East Smart Ticketing Initiative (NESTI) Arriva North East has become the first large bus operator in the region to successfully complete the testing of its smart ticketing technology.

Final stage approved

Arriva North East began the installation of smart card readers on all its buses last year and this final stage of testing has proved it is now handling more than a million concessionary card journeys successfully every month.

NESTI, led by Nexus on behalf of all local councils in the region, is bringing in a single smart ticketing across public transport in North East England, from the Tees Valley to the Scottish border. The programme is funded by the 12 local authorities in the North East, the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (TWITA) and Nexus

First company

Nick Knox, area managing director for Arriva North East, said: “We are very pleased to be the first company to complete the process and extremely excited about what this means for our passengers. The aim of smart ticketing is to improve the complete journey experience and we will continue to work closely with NESTI in developing new smart ticket products for the future. ”

Significant milestone

David Bartlett, Nexus Project Director for NESTI, said: “We are pleased to reach this significant milestone in the delivery of a region wide smart ticketing infrastructure that will allow passengers to travel from Berwick to the Tees Valley with a single smart card. NESTI looks forward to continuing to work with Arriva in the future as we continue to roll-out the step change in the way local people travel.”
