Engineering consultant WSP has been appointed by the City of Stockholm Development Office to provide all engineering services for the underground section of a major project to regenerate the Slussen area of Stockholm, one of the city’s key transportation hubs. The contract includes the design of a new underground bus terminal, and is part of a wider project to transform Slussen into a dynamic new urban quarter at the heart of Stockholm.

WSP won the tender for the underground, or rock, section of the project (the other two sections being water and land), and will provide multidisciplinary design services including feasibility study, preliminary and detailed design, rock mechanics, geotechnical, structural design, water and sewerage, M&E, traffic planning, risk management, fire, acoustics and environmental. The project will be designed in 3D using BIM technology.

The new bus terminal will serve commuters travelling to the suburbs of Nacka and Värmdö on the east side of Stockholm. It will form part of a new transport interchange, connecting passengers safely and efficiently with the city busses metro station. Buses will circulate inside the underground terminal hall around a central waiting area, exiting at ground level on the quay-side. The terminal is expected to be operational in 2018.
