Alstom and its local joint venture, Shanghai Alstom Transport Electrical Equipment Co., Ltd. (SATEE), have been awarded a contract worth around €26 million by Qingdao Metro Co., Ltd to supply the state-of-the-art traction system to Qingdao Metro Line 3.

According to the contract, Alstom and SATEE will provide traction systems equipped with the latest technology named Optonix for the 144 metro cars of Qingdao Line 3. “OPTONIX”, specially designed and developed by Alstom for the Chinese market, helps to reduce travel time and increase frequency of the train operation. Designed for high-speed metro, the system features lightweight and compact design, leading to high performance train operations at lower cost. Already implemented on Beijing line 15, this system is now fully operational since the end of 2010.

Qingdao Line 3, connecting Qingdao Railway Station and Qingdao Railway North Station, is 25km long with 22 stations and will be operating at 80 km/h with 2-minute headway. Commercial service is scheduled for December 2014.

“The Qingdao Line 3 contract represents the fifth traction contract for Alstom in China over the last 18 months, demonstrating our dynamic growth in the booming Chinese market. Alstom SATEE is becoming a leading manufacturer of traction systems in China by further localising R&D and engineering capabilities there, in order to respond to Chinese market expectations” said Dominique Pouliquen, President of Alstom Transport Asia Pacific and Alstom China Country President.

“Qingdao Line 3 will connect the vital business zones in the city and thus will play a central role in the city’s economic development. Alstom is very proud to contribute to Qingdao’s development and its metro plan” added Ling Fang, Managing Director of Alstom Transport China.
