Hong Kong MTR has awarded Thales a contract to supply an Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) and Security Access Management System for West Island Line (WIL), South Island Line (SIL(E)) and Kwun Tong Line Extension (KTE).

Hong Kong has a population of over 7 million people and a highly developed metro transportation network.

WIL, SIL(E) and KTE are all new extensions of the existing MTR rail network. The WIL, consisting of 3 stations, will add another 3 km to the Island Line, west of HK Island to Kennedy Town. The SIL(E), consisting of 5 stations, is a new section of 7 km which will serve the south of Hong Kong island to South Horizons. The KTE is a 2.6 km extension of the current Kwun Tong Line with 2 stations to Whampoa.

The contract includes the design, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning of the AFC system. The equipment to be supplied for the system will include ticket vending machines, self-service points, gates, card enquiry machines and portable card analysers.

The three extension lines are currently under construction with a forecast opening in 2014 for WIL and in 2015 for SIL(E) and KTE.

Olivier Guibert, Vice President Thales North Asia said: “We are very proud to win these new projects. They expand Thales’s footprint in Hong Kong, which is based on a long-term trusted relationship with the MTR Corporation.”

For ticketing in Hong Kong, Thales has already successfully implemented the West Rail Line, Ma On Shan Line, East Rail Line AFC Upgrade, Austin Station, East Tsim Sha Tsui Station and Lok Ma Chau Station AFC Systems. Thales also recently won the supervision and control system contract for the WIL.
