The delegation from the European SusStation Project – an initiative that supports the construction of sustainable stations – travelled to Antrim today to discuss Translink’s development plans.

Translink, a SusStation project partner, proposes a modern and innovative refurbishment and extension to complement the existing station building.

Translink Infrastructure Executive, Clive Bradberry, says the plans represent a further major milestone in the development of bus and rail passenger facilities for Northern Ireland:

“We are delighted to welcome local representatives and our European SusStation project partners to Antrim Bus and Rail Stations today. The proposed integrated designs for Antrim raise the bar in terms of environmental and sustainable station development in Northern Ireland.

“Sustainability is a key priority for Translink. We recognise the impact our organisation can have on the environment. Public transport by its very nature is a sustainable mode of travel and is instrumental in helping cut carbon emissions. Rail travel has been a huge success in NI. Over the last 10 years there has been over 60% passenger growth across the network however, the Londonderry line has been particularly strong with over 130% growth in passenger journeys – almost 1.5 million last year.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase our development proposals and also learn and share best practice with our European SusStation partners.

“This project also clearly highlights that there is an opportunity for our passenger facilities to really embrace sustainable features and technology to be more environmentally-friendly and operate more efficiently.

“We are looking forward to working closely with local representatives as this major project progresses and would ask for their support as we work hard to improve public transport facilities in the Antrim area,” said Clive.

Integrated bus and train passenger facilities to include:

  • an integrated bus/rail ticket office
  • park and ride facility providing 180 spaces,
  • enclosed modern accessible waiting area,

  • A new traffic management system and improved pedestrian access

Plans for the new Antrim Integrated Bus and Rail Station are now on display to the public in the train station.
