Bombardier’s advanced CBTC system, CITYFLO 650, is in service on the 8400 series metro cars that are being introduced on Line 6 of the Madrid metro, in addition to the 5000 series currently in operation. This means that the entire operating fleet on Line 6 will be CBTC – equipped and the full benefits of the BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 system can be realised in terms of capacity increase, service regularity and reduced waiting times (shorter intervals between trains).

The approval for commercial operation received from Metro de Madrid is the result of the successful partnership to provide a cutting-edge CBTC signalling solution that has been operating on the metro system Lines 1 and 6 since 2008. An increase in passenger-carrying capacity of 30 per cent has already been recorded on the two lines, and this is expected to increase with the introduction of the new series and the disabling of the legacy signalling system. The integration of the new trains into the existing CBTC system has been carried out by the Bombardier CBTC Engineering Centre of Excellence in Spain. Bombardier has also celebrated further milestones in the Iberian Peninsula, with the start of commercial operation in January of its CITYFLO 350 mass transit system at the new Ibarbengoa station on the Bilbao metro and delivery of a CITYFLO 250 solution for the new Line F of the Porto metro.

Anders Lindberg, President Bombardier Transporation Rail Control Solutions, stated: ”This approval in Madrid, and our ongoing work in Bilbao and Porto, is further testimony to Bombardier’s expertise in mass transit technology and our strong partnerships. We are very excited to continue our succesful work with all our customers including Metro de Madrid and further build our presence in the Spanish rail market.” Alvaro Rengifo, Chief Country Representative Spain, added: ”Bombardier continues to deliver its cutting edge technology throughout the region. We are very proud to be contributing to rail development and the commuter experience, through our combination of global expertise and strong local experience, particularly on the ground-breaking Madrid Metro project.” www.bombardier.com
