The transport association of Karlsruhe (KVV), Germany, has taken a step towards the mobile future: Passengers may now download a new iPhone application developed by Cubic Transportation Systems, a business unit of Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB).

KVV is widely known as an innovator in the field of intermodal infrastructure and over the past few years has made an effort to offer its passengers as much convenience as possible:

  • Since 2008, ticket purchase has been available in Karlsruhe using the mobile phone, negating the need to search for small change to buy a ticket at a ticket vending machine.
  • In February 2010 Cubic Transportation Systems expanded the mobile ticketing service for KVV enabling passengers to travel within the whole region of Karlsruhe, including Deutsche Bahn region, with a ticket on their mobile.
  • In September 2010, Cubic Transportation Systems (Deutschland) GmbH launched for KVV the iPhone App for mobile ticketing.

The App can be downloaded by iPhone users from the Appstore by searching under KVV. Users who are registered at the web portal of the KVV touch the app and the application opens ready to purchase a ticket. The ticket has two-dimensional (2-D) barcode when the screen is touched — to enable the ticket to be inspected by a barcode reader.

Single tickets, day tickets and also group tickets for a day can be bought via mobile in this way, no matter which fare stage and where the person is located within the KVV area.

“Karlsruhe is one of the key high-tech regions in Southern Germany which makes our innovation well-suited to the many iPhone users waiting for this app,” states Marcus Platts, Managing Director of Cubic Deutschland. “We are very pleased to be supporting KVV in the progression of their ticketing services.”

Dr. , CEO of the KVV, shares his opinion: “The iPhone App for mobile ticketing suits perfectly to this innovative region. We are well known for the possibility that our trams can use long distance rail tracks as well, the so-called Karlsruhe model. Our patrons like our new tram-trains. This is why we like to offer our passengers this comfortable, flexible and quick solution for more convenience.”
