China’s first Sky Train was unveiled as it came off the assembly line during a ceremony in the city of Nanjing.
On 10 September 2016, China unveiled its first Sky Train for use in smaller cities and areas of scenic interest. China has become the third country in the world behind Germany and Japan to develop the technology with design and construction taking place in just four months.
Sky Train designed for use in smaller cities
Developed by Nanjing Puzhen Company Limited, a subsidiary of China’s largest State-owned rolling stock manufacturer CRRC Corporation Limited, the Sky Train can accommodate more than 200 passengers and according to the manufacturer it is cheaper to run and has better climbing and turning ability compared with subways and trams.
The elevated railway trains are driven by rechargeable batteries which can operate for four hours at a time. The batteries are charged at station stops lasting approximately two minutes.
China’s Sky Trains are expected to debut next year at variety of scenic places.
