Trambus test runs begin on streets of Brussels before entering service in 2019

Flemish public transport company De Lijn has begun initial Trambus test runs on a future route which will commence in 2019.

The Trambus test programme will commence on a planned route from Jette to Brussels Airport via Vilvoorde. The trial will determine what changes are needed to existing infrastructure in order for the new vehicle to run safely and smoothly. Minister for Mobility Ben Weyts, has confirmed the mode will be in operation from 2019.

“The laying of tram tracks takes time and money. The Trambus allows us to offer a much faster alternative to the car and the traffic jam. The Trambus is the ideal stepping stone for a real tram,” said Minister Weyts.

Commenting on the tests De Lijn said “We want to prepare everything properly and thoroughly, so that we can offer our passengers an optimum and reliable service.” The company also confirmed that the vehicle would travel via dedicated lanes in some areas ensuring good flow.
