The Department for Transport (DfT) has taken stock of passenger numbers for Greater Manchester’s Metrolink network this week and it’s proving more popular than ever before.
During the year 2015/16 in excess of 34.3 million passenger journeys were made across the network – showing an increase of more than 10% on the previous year.
Metrolink proves popular and pleasing
The increase in journeys has been accompanied by an increase in customer satisfaction, which was reported to be a pleasing 89% – showing an improvement of 4% – over the same period. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) Metrolink Director, Peter Cushing, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to see that the number of people using Metrolink continues to rise and there’s every reason for it to keep on growing, as the improvements we’ve been making come to fruition.
“Together with the increase we’ve seen in passenger satisfaction, it’s proving to be a very positive year for Metrolink already, and we’re making good progress on the Second City Crossing that should make next year even better.
“I’m immensely proud of what’s been achieved and am looking forward to welcoming even more people on board our popular services in the future.”
Getting better all the time
As part of the £1.5 billion Greater Manchester Transport Fund, Transport for Greater Manchester are currently in the process of works to improve the Metrolink via the Second City Crossing. Due to be completed in 2017, the results will see an increase in the frequencies of services on its busiest lines, as well as the creation of a whole new line through Trafford Park. This will arm the Metrolink service with even greater resources to better serve the 2.7 million people living in the Greater Manchester area, meaning figures can expect to rise long into the future.
