The southern Dutch Province of Noord-Brabant has awarded bus manufacturer VDL Bus & Coach a contract to supply 40 Citeas electric buses to operator Hermes in order to provide zero-emission public transport.
The Zuidoost-Brabant concession was awarded to public transport operator Hermes in order to establish regional zero-emission public transport during 2016-2025, with the city of Eindhoven going fully electric by 2020. Hermes will work with the province and external partners including VDL to deliver ambitious targets in the areas of sustainability, innovation and mobility. The first phase will see delivery of approximately 40 Citeas SLFA Electric buses for delivery in December 2016.
40 Citeas electric buses due for delivery in December 2016
The VDL Citea SLFA Electric is an 18.1 metre electric articulated bus built with a BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) design. Under the name ‘Evolans’ the electric buses will operate on certain lines so often that the result will be a tram-like system. These high-frequency lines go to key destinations in Eindhoven, such as Eindhoven Airport and the High Tech Campus. Travellers will no longer have to wait long for the next bus thanks to a full-fledged ‘show up and go’ operating system.
In addition to the order, Hermes, part of Connexxion Nederland and Transdev, has also ordered 65 Citeas SLE (Volans) from VDL Bus & Coach for the introduction in the first phase. These buses are needed to convert part of the current diesel fleet to Euro 6 versions to achieve a cleaner transition to zero emission.
