The two-year ‘oneTRANSPORT’ project, valued at £3.5 million, will be part funded by Innovate UK as part of their Integrated Transport initiative. The collaborative transport research project will be undertaken by Arup and partners from across the industry including technology, telecommunications, transport, local authorities and academia.

The project aims to enable multimodal transport information, such as live information about rail delays, traffic jams, or disruption to be easily published by data owners (e.g. transport authorities and third parties) through personalised services creating better journeys for passengers.

oneTRANSPORT will pioneer a new approach into the use of open-data platforms, encouraging a fairer, more open market place, with Internet of Things (IoT) technology acting as an enabler for data sharing across traditionally ‘closed’ data-realms in the public and private sector.

In addition to Arup, the partners in the oneTRANSPORT project include InterDigital Europe, Buckinghamshire County Council, Clearview Traffic Group, Hertfordshire County Council, Highways England, Imperial College, Northamptonshire County Council, Oxfordshire County Council, Traak Systems and World Sensing.

Tim Gammons, Director of Intelligent Transport Systems, Arup commented: “This is an exciting time to be developing innovative services for the transport sector.  Whilst there is still much that can be done to improve transport connectivity, oneTRANSPORT will enable an important step-change in how data is shared and used. We are delighted to be involved in this project which challenges conventional data use in a growing digital age and are confident that oneTRANSPORT will provide a blue-print for smarter transport networks across the globe.”

Following successful completion of the first feasibility study, the project will now enter the in-field trial phase, demonstrating geographic interoperability, financial viability and operational benefits. It is hoped the research will provide a potential blueprint within the next 3-5 years.
