IndyGo receives $33 million to build new vehicle storage facility

The Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation (IndyGo) has announced that it will receive a $33 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to go towards the construction of a new garage at its East Campus headquarters.

The new storage facility will allow the transit agency to house additional vehicles as its fleet continues to expand its service as part of the Marion County Transit Plan. This money comes from a $1.66 billion federal fund assisting transit agencies, territories and states across the country to invest in 150 bus fleets and facilities. IndyGo is one of only nine agencies in the nation to receive more than $30 million from the programme.

“This new facility is essential to our growth, mission and ability to efficiently serve our riders,” said IndyGo President and CEO Inez Evans. “The space will bring us closer to our goal of reaching a near zero emissions fleet by allowing us to store additional electric vehicles for our upcoming bus rapid transit lines. We’re grateful to the FTA for presenting us these funds that will benefit residents throughout our city.”

In addition to more vehicle space, the new facility will provide IndyGo with increased maintenance and operations resources to service the agency’s increased fleet size.

The bus grant awards – made under FTA’s Buses and Bus Facilities and Low- and No-Emission Vehicle programmes – are FTA’s first competitive grant selections under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The programmes support the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to expand the nation’s transportation infrastructure, create and maintain good-paying jobs, and fight climate change.
