TramForward congratulates Transport for Greater Manchester on opening the new extension of Manchester Metrolink to Ashton-under-Lyne several months ahead of schedule.

The first passengers took the tram early on Wednesday 9 October. This East Manchester line extension has new stops at Audenshaw, Ashton Moss, Ashton West and Ashton-under-Lyne. From Ashton trams will run every 12 minutes to Piccadilly, taking a little over 30 minutes, continuing across the city to Victoria and on to Bury. Ashton Moss has

200 park and ride spaces, there are also 194 spaces at Ashton West (shared with users of the Ashton Moss Leisure Park) these are free to use for Metrolink passengers.

At 3.4km (2.1-mile) long this latest extension brings the total size of the current Metrolink network to 76.8km (47.7 miles), serving 73 stops. When new lines to Oldham and Rochdale town centres (2014), Manchester Airport via Wythenshawe (2016), and the second Manchester cross-city line are complete, the network will be more than three times its size when Metrolink opened in 1992.

It was announced a few days ago that Manchester has now received government approval for the construction of the Second City Crossing.
