Thales has signed with Trans Sistemas de Transportes, member of the VLT RMBS consortium*, a new contract to provide signalling and communications systems for the new Light Rail Transit (LRT) system in the city of Santos. After Sao Paulo and Manaus, Santos is the company’s third metro contract won in Brazil in less than 18 months!

The Santos light rail transit system is designed to streamline and modernise the Santos metropolitan area whose population is around 1.5 Million inhabitants. This line is expected to carry 70 000 passengers a day, reducing the bus fleet by 23% and saving significant cost in maintenance. The first phase of the programme will run 11 km from the port of Santos to the Barreiros terminal near São Vicente, a second section of 4 km will run from the Conselheiro Nébias station to Valongo.

Thales’s integrated solution include the signalling and control system, fixed and mobile communication systems, data transmission and multimedia solutions, and, the electronic traffic monitoring system.

“Winning the contract for the Santos LRT is a source of pride for us and further consolidates Thales’s presence in Brazil. It’s a real opportunity to bring its world-leading technologies to the Brazilian market and to continue to support the modernisation of our country’s infrastructure,” said Thomaz Aquino, Thales key account manager for transport in Brazil.

With a large portfolio of transportations systems and related services ranging from Signalling for main lines and metro, Supervision, Communications, Passengers Services and Revenue Collection Systems, Thales provides solutions that help transport operators to get the most out of their infrastructure for optimised operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
