Thales wins telecommunications contract for Manaus monorail

Thales, a world leader in advanced transportation systems for urban rail and main lines networks, has been selected to provide telecommunications systems for the Manaus monorail. The monorail will also be equipped with the Thales Seltrac® CBTC Communications-Based Train Control system and thus will benefit from an integrated Signalling and Communications solution. This third contract comforts Thales’ position in the Brazilian transportation business, following the CBTC signalling contract for São Paulo’s Line 17 driverless monorail won in 2011.

Thales will provide a turnkey telecommunications system including telecommunications, passenger information and comfort, security and supervision. The consortium building the Manaus monorail, which includes CR Almeida, Mendes Junior and Serveng-Civilsan, selected Thales to take part in the project based on the company’s global expertise in Integrated Communications and Supervision business with references in major cities such as Panama, Santo-Domingo, Caracas, New-Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai, Sydney, etc.

“With Thales technology, the project will have a communications infrastructure that fully supports the operational, administrative and maintenance applications needed to operate the monorail, ensuring reliability, redundancy, high availability and security in stations, marshalling yards and other operational facilities. The solution will include the TEPS system (Thales Enhanced Public Security), a physical security and surveillance system to view, record and search video images and provide decision support for a wide range of operational scenarios,” said Thomas Aquino, Thales Key Account Manager for Transport in Brazil.

All the telecommunications solutions will be partly provided by Thales’s international competence centre in Portugal, working closely with Omnisys, the Group’s Brazilian subsidiary, which has a strong presence in Brazil and is the local centre of expertise for Thales’s capabilities in the transportation industry.
