UK Power Networks claims energy providers will need to adapt to the needs of individual areas as electric vehicles become more and more widespread in the UK.
The project will redistribute energy generated by buses not in use and provide services for the national grid, regional distribution network operators, bus operators and transport authorities.
Electric car owners are set to benefit financially by charging their cars off-peak, by taking part in the UK’s first ever trial of a market-led approach to smart charging.
Ian Cameron, Head of Innovation at UK Power Networks, said smart charging is about promoting choice for consumers and offering incentives to change their charging patterns.
Funding is approved for industry-led Optimise Prime project to test the end-to-end impacts of the rollout of commercial electric vehicles.
