Munich operator MVG orders 22 new Avenio trams

Munich operator Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG), subsidiary of Stadtwerke München (SWM), has placed an order for 22 Siemens Avenio trams.

A total of 22 new trams will be ordered from Siemens with the option of a further 124 agreed. The initial order will consist of 9 two-piece, 9 three-piece and 4 four-car Avenio trams. The operator plans to couple two and three-part trains during weekdays providing a vehicle which is 48 metres in length and the longest tram used in Munich. As a result the vehicles will provide 260 seats for commuters on lines 20 and 21.

Agreement allows for an additional 124 Avenio trams between 2018 and 2028

Existing 8 Avenio trams will be switched to run alongside Variobahn type R3.3 trams on lines 16 and 17 together with the 4 new four-part Avenios. This will allow 13 older low-floor type R2.2 trams to be taken out of service and used as a source for spare parts for the remaining 55 R2.2 vehicles.

Herbert King, MVG General Manager, said: “With this order we improve the capacity of the Munich Tram further considerably: 13 older trains with a total of 2028 seats will be replaced by 22 new trains with a total of 3208 places.”

The option for an additional 124 trams containing two-part, three-part, four-part and five-car trains, allow for possible delivery between 2018 and 2028.
