London’s public transport system to accept Apple Pay

Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed the use of Apple Pay on London’s transport system when it launches in July 2015.

TfL is continuing efforts to promote contactless payment on London’s transport network. It will be the first public transport provider to accept the Apple Pay method of payment.

In total, over 100 million contactless journeys have been made on its services since its in-house system launched in 2014. TfL reveals over four million unique credit or debit cards have been used on the TfL network so far with more than 1.2 million contactless transactions occurring each day.

TfL’s Director of Customer Experience, Shashi Verma, said: “With around one in ten of all contactless transactions in the UK now taking place on our transport services in London, we are delighted to welcome Apple Pay as another new and convenient contactless way for our customers to pay for their travel. I would encourage anyone who uses pay as you go to try contactless. There’s no need to top-up, just touch in and out with your mobile device, credit or debit card.”

TfL now plans to transfer the benefits of contactless to the Oyster payment method ensuring customers can experience the same convenience.
