LuxTram Board of Directors announced the decision to award the contract to CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) following completion of a tender process which began in October 2014. The process took in to account the cost to remove an overhead line system between Red Bridge Station and Central Station. In total seven tram manufacturers entered the process including bids from Alstom, CAF and Stadler.

The contract worth €83 million includes the supply of 21 high-capacity trains for up to 450 people. The first track will be laid in early 2016 with delivery of the first tram expected in the first quarter of 2017.

CAF has currently supplied 230 trams to European cities including Stockholm, Birmingham, Nantes, Besançon, Zaragoza and elsewhere including the tram network in Sydney, Australia. CAF will present the first design elements for the Luxembourg tram network within the next couple of weeks.
