Aside from ‘smart infrastructure”, opportunities to achieve better value from investments made in new infrastructure can be missed if there is a lack of co-ordinated planning across separate infrastructure ‘silos’. Expedition, a London-based engineering consultancy firm that has developed the HS4Air high speed rail proposal that connects HS1 to HS2 via both Heathrow and Gatwick airports, advocates ‘smarter-planned infrastructure’ where a more joined-up approach in the planning of strategic infrastructure projects across multiple sectors would lead to substantial improvements in net-benefits, reduced environmental impacts whilst increasing the value of investments made on projects.
