Singapore launches Active Commute Grant to promote active mobility

The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) has launched the Active Commute Grant (ACG), which aims to encourage more developers to support those who adopt active commutes to work by providing end-of-trip facilities.

The ACG is an enhancement of the Singapore Travel Smart Grant (Developer) scheme, which will feature wider eligibility criteria, expanding the grant to light and general industrial developments, as well as existing developments carrying out simple retrofitting works.

Under the ACG, LTA will co-fund up to 80 per cent of the construction cost for end-of-trip amenities such as showers, lockers, changing rooms, wayfinding signage to these facilities as well as necessary security features – up to a maximum of S$80,000 (approximately £46,000) per development.

Providing more end-of-trip facilities at workplaces is part of LTA’s efforts to promote active mobility as a mode of transport, by making it easier and more convenient for employees to freshen up at the end of their journeys to the office.”

At an event in Punggol, Senior Minister of State for Transport, Communications and Information, Janil Puthucheary, said he hopes more people will consider mixed modes of transport in their commutes.

“What that means is you can walk to the MRT station and then maybe at the other end you could cycle. We accept it is going to be a mix of public transport and active mobility,” he said.

“But if you do not encourage active mobility, public transport is not easy for everybody to use from door to door. That is what we are trying to do – close the gap.”

Developers can apply for the ACG between 2 November 2019 and 30 June 2021.
