Abu Dhabi makes commitment to sustainable technologies

Masdar, an Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport have agreed to collaborate on the study, testing and evaluation of sustainable, electrical and autonomous transport technologies.

The agreement was made at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2018 between Khalifa Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Undersecretary of the Department of Transport, and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar.

The development of infrastructure for smart electrical and autonomous vehicle technologies is covered by the agreement, alongside the establishment of pilot projects to promote local capacity building. Al Mazrouei confirmed the Department of Transport’s commitment to supporting sustainable transport and encouraging use of low emission vehicles.

“The Department of Transport is continuously working to motivate the public to move towards the use of environmentally friendly vehicles in order to further boost the quality of life in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi,” said Al Mazrouei, as reported on Albawaba Business.

Masdar City, a sustainable community, has been an icon of sustainable mobility, introducing the first permanent driverless Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system in 2010 and continuously pioneering for new technologies to improve transportation. By the end of 2016 the PRT system had carried over 2 million passengers. The PRT system has recently been extended to autonomous electric vehicles from the French manufacturer Navya.

“Masdar is committed to the commercial development of sustainable transport infrastructure and Masdar City is at the heart of the emerging trend in sustainability mobility,” said Al Ramahi. “This partnership will help to identify innovative technologies that may be potentially developed at scale.”
